The Science Behind Richlam® Integral Waterproofing

Richlam®’s crystalline waterproofing technology simulates the healing process of the periosteum in animal bones. When embedded in concrete, its crystalline admixture lies dormant until activated by moisture. Upon water ingress, these self-healing concrete waterproofing chemicals form dense crystals within cracks and capillaries—sealing them permanently.

This integral crystalline waterproofing cycle of dormancy–activation–crystallization–dormancy repeats automatically for the life of the structure. Richlam®-protected structures can self-heal cracks up to 1.0 mm, eliminating the need for external maintenance and delivering true maintenance-free concrete waterproofing.

2. Crystalline Growth Factor Method

Mimics periosteum bone regeneration. Crystalline waterproofing admixtures embedded in concrete respond to water ingress by forming healing crystals at crack sites. This method is the first to achieve real-world commercial application in self-healing concrete.

Richlam®’s crystalline concrete waterproofing technology goes beyond cracks. It also heals voids, honeycombs, surface blemishes, and micro-defects. Among these, capillary pores are the most common and dangerous, acting as channels for water and chemical ingress. Richlam®’s crystalline waterproofing agents penetrate into nanoscopic pores, crystallize in place, and significantly reduce porosity—enhancing the density and durability of the structure.

Under electron microscopy, the effect is visible: nano-pores blocked, voids sealed, and the matrix densified. This is self-healing concrete, backed by science, designed for the future.
